The Best Soup I've Ever Had

I love French Onion soup.

Years ago I used to make it myself. However, somewhere along the way I got quite lazy when it came to cooking and I found making it to be a chore. So, if I wanted it I would have to order it in a restaurant. Problem was, no matter where I ordered it, it never quite lived up to my expectations. Well, that changed yesterday.

While in Windsor (Nova Scotia) Mom and I decided to eat lunch out. At first we weren't sure where to go, but as we were walking back to the car we walked past Lucky Italiano (Water Street). We've been meaning to go it for awhile, so this was the perfect opportunity.

The moment we walked in we were in love. The chalk board menus (I love chalk board menus), the small quaint size, the ornate metal (or metal like) ceiling, and the heavenly aroma of Italian food. It was right up our alley.

After going over the menu there were a few things we thought of ordering, but when we found out that the soup of the day was French Onion we were both sold.

Now, there is nothing worse than getting a bowl of French Onion soup and there are barely any onions in it. Well, not a problem here. I swear there must have been close to two onions in this bowl! The broth was very rich tasting and flavoured perfectly. Instead of having croutons and covering the whole bowl in cheese they had a "giant crouton" topped with cheese. It was perfect.

As a treat we decided to get dessert and split the warm brownie. What can I say, it was a warm, chocolaty bit of indulgence. Well worth the splurge.

It was the best meal I have had out in a long time. I will be going back. I hope often.

If you ever find yourself in Windsor and are looking for a place to eat, try Lucky Italiano.

Snow, snow and more snow

The first *real* snow of the season arrived today. We had plenty of warning and were prepared. Still, as pretty as it is, I'm not a big fan of the snow and all it entails. I've started my count down to spring.

To make the best of it I decided I would try out the time lapse app I recently downloaded to my iphone. I put the phone in the front window and let it run from 9 am to 5 pm. There were a few falls (read cats playing with the power cord and pulling it out of the window), the quality isn't that great and I should have put it in a window facing the back yard where the amount of snow that fell is more apparent. However, it was my first time lapse experiment and I've learned what not to do next time.

Is this my return to regular posting? I don't know. Maybe. We'll see.

In the mean time enjoy Halloween at my house:

The Day of Thunder, Lightning and Rain

The weather in Nova Scotia is always unpredictable. That's just the way it is. When you live here you know this and rarely bat an eyelid when things seem a bit odd in the way weather. (Of course this doesn't stop us from complaining about it). However on Tuesday (August 2, 2011) things were more than a little bit odd, it was down right strange.

We knew we were expecting thunder storms to roll through. But I doubt very much that anyone really expected 8 hours (or more) of heavy rain...

...thunder...

...and more lightning then I have every seen in my life.

The storm was a bit out of the ordinary. And while I do not possess a fear of thunder and lightning (personally I enjoyed the light show Mother Nature put on), I can say that I hope not to experience a storm like that again for quite some time.

helicopters

I worked at the office yesterday. When I went out for lunch these three helicopters where flying all around the Lakeside/Bayers Lake/Beechville area. There were points when they were much closer, but I was driving. But I was able to shoot this when I parked.
